WEIRD KIDS & WEIRD KIDS FOR LIFE

Weird is our favorite compliment!

Weird kids meet up started off having a once a month meet up at Shenanigans and has transformed into meet ups not only at Shenanigans but around the area, special events, and an online source of support.

We are here for the weird kids of all ages. We now support kids, teens, and adults!

Jessica Cotton, a teacher and owner of Shenanigans Comedy Theatre, is the mother of three weirdos and a weird kid for life.  Read more of her story from this article from Rocket City Mom.

This group was originally started for weird kids with a focus on teens and has grown to encompass all ages.

As far as who you can expect to meet at these events: Every kind of person with varying interests! Weird can be whatever you want it to be. It is typically what has made people feel left out or ostracized. Here those inherent traits, wild hobbies, skills, info dumping, shy folks, and neurodiverse thinkers are celebrated.

We are 1000% LGBTQ+ friendly. We have a large number of youth that participate that have fresh names and pronouns, or are newly exploring their identify. We also have families with same sex parents.

There are a large number of members with disabilities, mental health struggles, PTSD, or a difficult home dynamic. There is zero room for judgement in this group.

We are here to love one another, be a support system (because life isn't easy), and to attempt to help our weird kids and our weird selves feel safe and make friends.

Please make sure you speak to your children and that your family is open to accepting all of these people before attending events.

If you’re weird or have a self proclaimed weird kid, join the Facebook Group for information on meetups and events. Once you have joined the Facebook group you can access the Discord Server.

Yearly Events

We have private monthly meet ups that provide a safe space to meet new people, but we also have yearly events that are open to the public or are part of a collaboration with other organizations. Public events are listed on Shenanigans Facebook page and inside the private group pages. We are always looking for new ways to engage our group members. Private events in the adult group include Trauma Dump and Crafting, Board Game Night, Singles/Dating events, and celebrations for most holidays. We also have an event for all ages called "Try it out Day". This event allows you to try new hobbies for free with welcoming people!

ARTS UNDERGROUND - WEIRD KIDS MEET UP OF NORTH ALABAMA

wlrh.org

Weird Kids MeetUp of North Alabama launched in the Summer of 2021 by Shenanigans Comedy Theatre co-founder, Jessica Cotton. Jessica encourages her Weird Kids and parents to take the word "weird" as a compliment, turning the commonly negative connotation of the word on its head, and embracing the uniqueness that makes each one of us special.
